A transfer certificate (TC) is issued by your child's current school when the child leaves. The new school uses it to confirm the class completed and the date of leaving. Most schools ask for it for admission to Class 2 and above.
How to request a TC
- Write to the principal requesting the TC, with the reason for leaving and the last working day.
- Clear any pending fees, library books and other dues. Schools usually issue the TC only after dues are cleared.
- Collect the TC and the latest report card. Check the name, date of birth and class on the TC.
Moving between boards
Moving from a State board school to a CBSE or ICSE school (or the other way round) is common at Class 1, Class 6 or Class 11. After Class 10 on one board, the new school may also ask for a migration certificate. Ask the new school what it needs before you request documents from the old one.
Moving mid-year
Mid-year moves are possible, but seats in popular schools fill up. Contact the new school before you inform the current one, and ask for a written confirmation of admission.
