Age criteria are one of the most common questions parents ask. Here is what the national guidance says and how schools usually apply it.
Class 1: age 6
In February 2024, the Ministry of Education wrote to all states and union territories asking them to ensure that children admitted to Class 1 are at least 6 years old, in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and the Right to Education Act. Many states and schools are moving to this rule, though the cut-off date (for example, age 6 completed by 1 June or by 31 March) varies.
Pre-primary classes
The National Education Policy describes a foundational stage that includes 3 years of pre-school before Class 1. Many schools therefore follow a pattern like this:
- Nursery or pre-KG: about 3 years and above
- LKG: about 4 years and above
- UKG: about 5 years and above
- Class 1: 6 years and above
These ages are a common guide, not a fixed rule. Each school publishes its own age criteria and cut-off date.
What to do
- Ask every school on your shortlist for its age criteria and cut-off date in writing.
- If your child's birthday is close to the cut-off, ask early how the school applies it.
- Keep the birth certificate ready; it is the document schools use to check age.
This guide is general information for parents. Rules, dates and fees change, so always confirm with the school or the official source mentioned.
