After Class 10, students in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh choose a stream for intermediate (Class 11 and 12). The choice shapes entrance exams and degree options, so it is worth thinking through.
The main streams
- MPC (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry): the usual route to engineering through exams such as JEE and EAPCET, and to science and architecture courses.
- BiPC (Biology, Physics, Chemistry): the route to medicine through NEET, and to pharmacy, agriculture, nursing and life sciences.
- MEC (Mathematics, Economics, Commerce): for commerce, chartered accountancy, economics and management.
- CEC (Civics, Economics, Commerce): for commerce, law, civil services preparation and humanities.
- HEC (History, Economics, Civics): for humanities, law and civil services.
How to choose
- Start from your child's interests and strengths in Class 9 and 10, not only from popular careers.
- Look at the entrance exams each path needs, and the coaching pressure involved.
- Visit junior colleges and ask about class sizes, teaching hours, results and student well-being.
CBSE Class 11 and 12 instead of intermediate
Many CBSE schools offer Class 11 and 12 with science, commerce or humanities. Find them in the directory, for example schools in Hyderabad, where each area page lists schools that go up to Class 12.
This guide is general information for parents. Rules, dates and fees change, so always confirm with the school or the official source mentioned.
